First Order
If you’re planning to order labels for the first time, there are bound to be many uncertainties. Project managers will, of course, help you navigate all the details, but here are a few key points worth considering when ordering customized labels for your products.
Label Design
Not all printing houses offer design services, so print files usually need to be prepared in advance. Make sure your design matches your brand guidelines and personal preferences. Each printing house has its own technical specifics (every machine has its “signature”), which must be considered when preparing the layout. Always double-check resolution, size, shape, and colors. The quality of the submitted file directly affects the quality of the final print.
Label Material
Material choice is important not only for design but also from a practical perspective, to avoid issues later on. Paper is the simplest and usually the cheapest option, but it’s not suitable if the product will be exposed to external factors like moisture or mechanical impact. Film (plastic) labels are more durable but may make unpacking difficult since they don’t tear easily. The range of materials is wide, and remember: even the same material can come with different adhesives, each with its own properties.
Adhesive & Finish
Adhesive determines how well the label sticks and holds. The type of adhesive depends on the product and surface, so always specify conditions — for example, if the product will be frozen, pasteurized, or exposed to chemicals.
Finish: matte or glossy is mostly a matter of taste and overall design. Additional coatings like varnish or laminate are more about protection against environmental or mechanical impact.
Quantity & Variations
Be clear about how many labels you need and whether the order includes multiple versions (designs). There can be significant differences in printing technology and pricing depending on whether you need 100,000 of one design or 1,000 of many. Always state the quantity in pieces — not rolls, boxes, or containers.
Label Size & Shape
This depends on the product and your preferences, but keep in mind there are no real “standard” sizes in the label world. For example, a 500ml jar can be labeled in many ways. One small front label with name and details, a front label plus a back label, or a single wraparound label covering most of the jar, with or without a gap to show the product.
As many products as there are, so many labeling options exist.
Application Method
By hand or automatically. Automatic labeling machines have strict requirements for rolls. If the winding direction is wrong, labels might be applied upside down. If the roll is too large, it might not fit the machine at all.
Production Time
If your order is urgent, start by sharing this information. Printing houses plan according to their production schedules, so shorter lead times must be agreed upon in advance and depend on current capacity.
